ORCA issues Flood Watch - September 5, 2024

Message #2024-16
Issued: 3:45 p.m. Thursday, September 05, 2024.

This FLOOD WATCH is issued for all watercourses within the jurisdiction of Otonabee Conservation, except the Trent-Severn Waterway, because the potential for flooding exists within local watercourses and municipalities.

Municipalities of Selwyn, Douro-Dummer, Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Cavan Monaghan, City of Kawartha Lakes, City of Peterborough, Trent Hills, Indigenous communities, local water managers, emergency services and individual landowners should take appropriate preparations and monitor conditions.

Weather:  Starting Friday, September 6th, a slow-moving low-pressure system with a strong cold front will advance into the region. A line of thunderstorms will occur along the front. Friday morning and continuing into Saturday, rain will fall throughout the region. Friday and Saturday’s total rainfall is expected to be 30-50 mm. Thunderstorms will produce additional local amounts of 15-35 mm. The remainder of the weekend will see non-threatening rain showers.

Flood Risk: On Friday and into Saturday, the region will experience localized pockets of heavier rain and/or moderate to strong thunderstorms embedded in the slow-moving storm. Heavy rain, falling in a short period of time, could result in nuisance to minor flooding in flood-prone areas, and water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas.

As a result, municipalities, Indigenous communities, local water managers, emergency services and individual landowners are advised to prepare for potential flooding and to monitor conditions, including weather alerts and weather radar for the specific location and severity of rainfall. Water levels can be monitored at Trent-Severn Waterway, Water Survey of Canada and Otonabee Conservation websites.

Recreational water users are urged to remain cautious of high, turbulent and fast water levels and flows that will persist throughout the weekend and into early next week.

This FLOOD WATCH message will expire Monday, September 9, 2024, at 3 p.m., unless updated earlier
